From Gorky Park to Central Park to Town Park
We see kids playing in three parks in different parts of the world: Gorky Park in Moscow, Central Park in New York City, and Town Park in tiny Telluride, Colorado. They speak to the camera about their love of trees, and their hopes and concerns for the future. Intercut with the childrens' interviews are scenes from logging operations and scenes from a lumber mill.
From Market to Menu
We follow a pair of chefs from a famous restaurant in New York City as they walk over to a large farmer's market and choose that day's specials from the abundant September harvest. They visit a number of farm stands, and choose bags of vegetables. Eventually they make their way back to the kitchen where the food is chopped, cooked, and finally served.
Into the Trees
We follow a group of campers into the Rockies, where children will be introduced to a National Forest. As we walk through the trees, we see scenes of enchantment. We learn that the old-growth forest is home to a huge variety of creatures great and small; that it's the place where tiny droplets of dew grow into powerful rivers which carry water to our cities and farms; that it gives us wood and paper, and helps to clean our air. We spot different things through the trees: a bear, some longhorn sheep, an eagle. The campers walk by a clear-cut patch of trees, and we learn that sometimes people take too much from the forest. Children will hear that we can have trees forever if we take care of them.
Kids Learn About the Reef
Children in a school room on Key West are given a preliminary lesson on the coral reefs. They then take a field trip to the Reef Relief Center for Marine Education where they learn all about the reefs, through a lecture and watching some videos. They later talk to us about their feelings for the coral and the oceans.
Manure Man
We see Fred the Farmer working with his cows. He feeds them grain, rounds them up in the corral, and trims their horns. On a gooey, rainy day in spring he piles up their manure with his tractor and lets it compost. When the piles of compost are "cooked" he spreads it out in his fields as fertilizer. Some of it he mixes up in a tub with some water and then sprays it on the newly-planted fields. He shows us what soil fertilized with manure looks like and what soil fertilized with chemicals looks like.
