The Green SceneThe Green Scene is a series of short, entertaining films on the environment, made for the future caretakers of our beautiful planet. Some of the stories are:
Billy Builds His House
Billy builds a brand-new house in Montana, using all recycled lumber. The whole community comes over and helps him frame and raise his walls. They all talk about how important trees are to them and how they'd like to preserve the forests for future generations.
Brad Goes To Work
The hired hand on a big North Dakota farm goes through a mind-boggling variety of activities in one long, goofy day. Emphasis is on the machines of farming: lots of noise, lots of close-ups, gears shifting, engines starting. Brad is in a state of repose as the machines do their thing. Maybe we'll see an interview with the monosyllabic Brad about the pleasures of farming. Voice-over narration delivered by a child.
Clara Goes Milking
Clara, her daughter, the new puppy, and some kittens all pitch in for the daily chore of milking a herd of cows. We follow Clara as she walks to her family's dairy barn and prepares the stalls for milking: cleaning the floors, putting out feed, letting the cows in from the yard, washing the cows' udders. She then scrubs out the central collection area for milk and maybe talks a little about what she's doing. Her daughter joins her and helps her to attach the milk machines. They give some milk to the barn kittens and the new puppy. The milk is seen going through the pipes and collecting in the tanks. Then the chore is over -- until the next morning.
Down In the Dirt
Fred the Farmer talks about the importance of healthy topsoil, relating it to a human body. Soil is alive, Fred explains, and we look at it through some beautiful microscopic photography. We look at archival footage from the period in American history when the topsoil blew away --the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. Techniques that Farmer Fred uses to feed the soil (compost, green manuring, mulching, special natural sprays) are shown in detail.
Fred & Cervasio
Fred the Farmer lives in North Dakota, and recycles everything on his farm in order to grow food. He uses a variety of techniques, which are explained simply, from composting cow manure to mulching to feeding leftovers to his livestock. We see him at his home, an earthship built into a rise, which saves energy by taking advantage of the sun. Cervasio is a farmer who lives in the rainforest of the Amazon. He has constructed his farm to take full advantage of the climate and to conserve energy. We see the ingenious devices he has invented to help him farm.
